Is 'real' music dead?

Journal Entry: Thu Apr 30, 2009, 11:16 PM
It's a very controversial topic, I think, but, maybe because of, or in spite of, my recent fascination with American Idol and Adam Lambert, I can't help but wonder, and I don't seem to be the only one.

As an 80's baby, I'm right in the middle of a HUGE cultural gap, but I've noticed that...from early-to-mid 90s on, I just can't enjoy popular music anymore. At first I thought it was simply the boy band--Brittany Spears influence, because that's simply not my taste, but as I've been reading what other people are starting to say, maybe it's not just that.

Has mainstream music completely lost the warmth and emotional connection that had made music such a huge cultural influence? Is that why it's been so long since we've had an Elvis, or a Madonna, or a Michael Jackson? (and I don't mean the pale imitation some of those artists have become of themselves, either.)

I HAVE become really fascinated with Adam Lambert as of late and it's starting to occur to me that maybe it's not just because he's adorable. I've always been a big fan of music, even though I can't play a note of it myself, but I've always gravitated back to the 80s, 70s, and even the 60s and 50s rather than current music, because there's just something about it that....really gets inside of you, I think.

This article by Ann Powers really got my attention, though, and got me wondering.

Why IS it so important for so many people that Adam Lambert win what is, essentially, a popularity contest judged by record label standards, and an army of tween girls?

And maybe it's not just about Adam, either. In an interview with Michael Slezak from EWs Idolatry, former contestant Lil Rounds talk about how music has become cold, and lost the warmth of the older generations. And...that really connected with me, to the point that I have to think there's something to it.

Am I the only one that feels this way?

Real music exists, sweety, you just have to search harder for it. The real musicians are buried behind all the pop and rap icons that the media has shoved in our face. I have found plenty of amazing musicians that really touch me in ways I can't describe.

Yeah. But it always seems now like the people who can really get to you with a song, or a style, are constantly lost behind the media hype of ';popular' standards. And I can't figure out why we're looking for the standard types, when it's the types from completely left field that always make the most impact. And I'm wondering if those real artists will ever be able to shine like the should. *pout*

Yeah, the sad truth of the matter. That's what the age of media means. It's the same with everything.

I think it's good those musicians don't get too popular because then the fame won't ruin them, or the industry. They can stay true to themselves.

Yeah. I guess. I just wish they could get popular so more people could enjoy them. I guess it's selfishness all around. XP Blah. Music just isn't as much of an art as it used to be.

It seems like all the good, true musicians are staying out of the limelight to avoid money games and over-commercialization. A lot of artists are doing things themselves - with the internet there's no need to make cds or tapes - a file is fine, and a lot of people are using places like Myspace for just that. Just keep rootin' for the underdog, dear, real music is coming back. It's out there - Adam Lambert, Susan Boyle, Hollie Steel - and it's going to tell the general populace how low their standards really are and how high their expectations of music should really be.

I was born in 91 so I dont' know if that makes me too young to really judge but yes, I know what you're saying. I grew up on music from before my time and the music noawdays just.. it sucks. it honestly sucks. Real music does exist (although it really comes down to the personal definition of 'real' music) but it's something that can't be found on the surface anymore. You have to dig around and be poen to find somethignt hat can actually be enjoyed rather than these dime-a-dozen, whiny-toned, eternally sharp emo tween bands that burn my ear drums out on a daily basis in the halls of my high school.

I honestly have no idea who Adam Lambert is, but just keep the faith and keep digging, Dai, you'll find it <3

I grew up during the 80s too, but I grew up with all the great old time singers from the 50s to the 80s, courtesy of my parents. The have an awesome music collection with some good bands that put out more than a popular song or two before they faded out. Just some great quality stuff and they were not afraid to sound different either.

To me, it seems like all the music out there these days sounds the same.

You should check out the American Idol website and look at some of his performances. He's a 27yr old gay guy from Hollywood who....has a voice that is just staggering. He amazes me.

Music all really does sound the same these days. It's all rap or pop garbage. It's not even good rap, like when it first came about. It's just....blah.
